As a disease becomes more serious, exterior organs improve but the internal organs are more affected. Symptoms will move from the periphery of the body, usually from the toes and fingers, towards the center of the body, notably the heart and nerves. Symptoms also will move towards the head. Life-sustaining systems are attacked latest in the disease process. The acute disease slowly becomes chronic as the acute attacks become more frequent and severe. Temporary alterations of functions become a permanent alteration of structure. Pathology moves from the physical level to the emotional to the mental levels.
When a patient suddenly is relieved of a skin rash by a cortisone cream but experiences more frequent depression, a conventional doctor remains confused or uninterested. The homeopath sees a pattern. The homeopath will treat the depression with a remedy hoping that the skin rash will come back so it may be treated with another remedy if the first remedy is not able to dismiss that symptom as well. A homeopath may induce suffering as a path to cure instead of palliating symptoms.
As modern psychiatry has known since Freud passed the law down, the organism will arrange a mental disorder that allows it to best function and that, without the disorder, the organism would sink into more fully developed insanity and emotional distortion. Homeopathy reflects this principle throughout the physical plane as well as the emotional and mental planes.
