Colds or flu

Colds and the flu were not well distinguished since the symptoms overlapped. The flu is referred to as epidemic or contagious catarrh and a head cold is just a catarrh. Flu was also called grippe by the French. The Italians started calling the severe colds they got “The Influence” or influenza and we shortened it to the flu.
Acute and inflammatory in general. Ferr-p, Acon, Cham, Rhus-t, Nux-v, Puls, Bell, Coloc.
Less violent. Dulc, Ip.
At early onset of cold to stop development. Camph tincture, one drop every half hour for a few hours.
Long-lasting and returns often. Carbo-v, Sulph, China. If no results, then Sil or Hep-s.
Long-lasting and returns often with nose running or stopped up. Sil. Follow Sil with Calc for teething children.
From bathing. Bry, Ant-c, Sulph, Nux-m.
After a few weeks then Carb-v or Calc.
Can’t perspire. Cham or China, Ars or Sil.
Profuse perspiration. Merc, Phos-ac, Carb-v, Suplh, or Hep-s.
Easily takes cold. Coff, Bell, Nux-m, Nux-v, Hina, Dulc. Or Sil, Carb-v, Calc but in long intervals. No coffee or alcohol, prefer cold drinks, wash with cold water, get outside often.
Easily takes cold, but really wants to go outside. Cepa
Easily takes cold after trying general remedies, and chilled by every slight cool breeze. Nux-v or Cham.
Affected by every cool breeze. Bry or Rhus-t, Nux-m, Ver, or Merc.
If no results then Carb-v or Calc.
Can’t stand any breeze. Carb-v.
Can tolerate a light breeze but no more. China, Bell, Sulph, Sil or Calc.
Follow one after the other with long intervals.
Afraid of cold air, but worse in warm room. Apis
In dry, cold, and windy weather. Acon. Drink cold water before sleep, cover up well and try to perspire.
In wet and cold weather with stiffness. Strong coffee with no milk. Nux-v if it keeps you up.
Cold weather causes pain. Ars.
From cold and wet after exertion with headache. Especially if hot head, face red, pulse quick, eyes red, neck throbs. Holding head or better from forehead pressure, says head is too large. Glon. Bell or Bry may follow well.
Worse in wet and stormy weather. Better by external warmth. Nux-m.

Affected by thunderstorms. Bry during storm. Follow with Sil.
Phos and Sulph are recommended also.
Excessive fear during thunderstorms. Gels. If no results, then Glon.

Damp weather affects chest. Dulc or Carb-v.
Worse by any change of weather. Merc., Rheum or Rhus-t. Follow with Sulph or Sil.
Worse only in night air. Merc and after a few days, Sulph. Follow with Carb-v if needed.
Perspiration has stopped and pain in head, ear, teeth, or abdomen follows. Cham. If earache only, then Rhus-t.
Inactive women in bed with headache, mostly right-sided, from cold air, or sitting up with neck pain from uncovering. Bell. Rhus-t if pain extends to shoulders. Bry if more left-sided throbbing and shooting pain, lower jaw, arms and chest affected and worse from motion. Spig if temple, eyes, upper jaw, upper chest near heart affected.
Perspiration during rain. Rhus-t. Bry if no relief and after exertion.
During spring in general. Verat, Rhus-t, Carb-v.
During summer in general. Bell, Bry, Ant-c, Carb-v.
During autumn in general. Verat, Merc, , Rhus-t.
During winter in general when dry. Acon or Bell, Bry, Nux-v, Cham or Sulph. Ip sometimes.
During winter in general when damp. Dulc, Nux-m, Verat, Carb-v.
Late summer when hot quickly turns to cold. Bell.
Late summer after a long period of cold, wet weather. Nux-m. Especially for sensitive people.
Worse significantly when weather changes from warm to cold. Dulc or Rhus-t.
Worse significantly when weather changes from cold to warm. Carb-v or Lach.
Worse from dampness mostly. Nux-m.
Cough and extremity pain. Rhus-t.
Suppressed perspiration of the feet. Silicea.
After a child’s haircut. Bell.
After a child’s haircut with sudden faintness, twitching, convulsions, congestion, heat in head, red face, or fear with mistrust or anxiety. Glon.
With fear and wanting to cry or run away in a child. Bell.
When a child is cutting teeth. Cham.
Flu. Constant sneezing, nose slightly swollen and sore, constant watery discharge, offensive smell, pain in head and cheek, profuse night sweat, worse in morning or when with fever, dislikes being alone, much thirst, doesn’t like too much heat yet can’t bear the cold. Merc.
Symptoms were better but now worse again. Great for kids and after suppressed perspiration with fever and pains in extremeties. Runny nose or headache renewed by each breath or when one nostril is affected and headache worse by every movement. Hep-s. If no results, then Bell.
Flu. Worse from wet and windy weather. Starts on left and goes to right. Much sneezing, profuse acrid discharge, nose inflamed and sore down to lips, eyes running, headache, cough, thirst, heat, pain in teeth or all over, worse at night and inside, better in open air and in cold but always worse returning to warm room. Cepa.
Severe symptoms, profuse watery discharge, great soreness and swelling. Lach.
Desire for warmth, not much redness, heat or thirst but feels like they’re on fire, drinks often but a little at a time, unusually weak, restless, agitated, discharge not offensive but burning, nostrils very sore and uncomfortable, better with motion and warmth, cold does not make worse. Ars, Dulc, Nux-v and sometimes Ip.
Nose is stopped up but still runs, acrid discharge, sore inside and out. Sleeplessness at night for no other reason, nose bleeds at night, restless. Ars. If no results in 12 hours, then Nux-v.

Nose isn’t too sore, mucus is thick and yellowish, or green and offensive. Puls.

Thin nose discharge with scalding tears.

Euph

Mucus is thick and yellowish with heat rash or flaky nose.

Rhus-t

Acrid discharge with ulcerated nose and chapped lips, one cheek pale and the other red, chills and thirst, mostly children, from suppressed perspiration.

Cham.

Nose, runny, with a cold or flu

Loss of smell and taste.

Puls.

Heat in eyes and head and sore nose.

Bell. Ipec or Nux v if nose is stopped up.

Wind from body of water causes head cold, worse evening and inside, better outside, headache, eyes running, fever.

Cepa

Gets a cold after wet feet.

Cepa

Runny nose stops after being in cold, especially if worse in afternoon or dejected and fearful.

Puls.

Runny nose stops after being in cold, worse at night or early morning, or irritable, sensitive and excited.

China

After eruption suppressed.

Ip. Cuprum if no effect. Bry, Puls, Sulph, or Nux mosch might be given instead.

Recovery stops from new cold with pain over eyes, worse right side, face flushed.

Bell

Recovery stops from new cold with pain over eyes, worse left side with pale face

Cough, with a cold or flu

With runny nose or cough lingers after cold.

Nux-v

Dry cough, causing urge to vomit.

Ipec.

Hollow cough, causing urge to vomit.

Carbo-v.

Tough expectoration, esp. with children.

Cham.

Moist or loose expectoration.

Ferr-ph or Puls.

Cough every time after feeling cold air.

Phos-ac

Cough every time extremity exposed in bed. Hollow and tiring.

Hepar-s

Worse after going to bed and always when getting warm in bed.

Nux-m

After cold air. Dry and convulsive with vomiting or if blood in expectoration, with stitching pain in side, under ribs, or in head. Or if caused by tickling throat and sore chest results with hard quick pulse.

Bry

After cold air. Weak pulse, soreness lingers or felt during cough. Burning sensation in chest instead of stitching pain, oppression and palpitation.

Carbo-v.

Breathing, difficult, with a cold or flu

As if suffocating.

Ip. If no results, then Ars or Bry. Asthma remedies may be indicated like Nux-v, Cup, or Sam. Use water vapor from hot drinks for relief. If still no results, then Sulph.

Diarrhea, with a cold or flu

Immediately after getting a cold.

Op. If no results then Dulc.

Appears a day or so afterwards with abdomen pain or other symptoms.

Dulc.

Starts during day without pain, or worse during day and better at night.

Ferrum

Worse after midnight, better early morning.

Phos-ac

After eating ice cream.

Ars.

After ice water or mild drinks.

Carbo-v

In warm weather, chilled from cold water or evaporating perspiration. Head hot, some abdomen pain. Or stomach and abdomen pressure sensitive. Or undigested food in stool.

Bry.

Undigested food in stool after contaminated water.

Bry. If no results then China.

With gas, cutting pain around navel during elimination, straining, great weakness, mucus and blood. Or after alcoholic drinks.

Nux-v

Much blood and mucus.

Dysentery remedies.

Blood and mucus often but not severe especially if worse in morning.

Sulph.

Abdomen, pain, with a cold or flu

Violent, spasmodic, pressing, esp. before elimination that is burning, thin, and brownish.

China

Cramping under ribs, moving right to left, diarrhea which exhausts, chills, white coated tongue, bad breath, morning headache, dullness and sleepiness rest of day.

Nux-m

Violent, tearing, twisting as if in motion, can’t sit still, like a large ball in side or abdomen was hollow, with nausea and vomiting, watery, slimy or greenish diarrhea smelling like bad eggs (sulphuric) Cham.

Upset stomach after eating fatty food, worse in afternoon towards evening, or during night if gas in stomach. Or if stomach pressure sensitive. Also for pregnant women when pain is like labor.

Puls.

With a tendency to cry, very sensitive and can’t sleep. Coff.

Extremely violent. Will drive patient mad.

Cham.

Always worse in open and cold air, better in warm air. Very changeable.

Nux-m.

Headache, with a cold or flu

Bursting, with rush of blood to head, worse from walking or going up stairs, worse in open air or slight breeze.

Bell.

Pressure in spots, with roaring in ears or difficult hearing.

Dulc.

Feels like loose brain as if it struck against the skull when shaking head. Starts after breakfast or worse after a meal. With giddiness, sleepiness and dullness.

Nux-m

For external headache after a breeze.

Nux-v

For internal headache after a breeze.

Bell.

After bathing, with nausea, giddiness upset stomach, worse from smoking.

Bell. If no results then Ant-c. or Bry.

When a child has a headache.

Bell, Bry, Glon, Puls.

From suppressed nose discharge.

Acon. If discharge doesn’t return then Puls or Cinch.
Excessively violent pain esp. over left eye.

Spig.

Forehead or worse on right side with more throbbing. Mucus yellow like pus.

Bell.

Pain always returns for a few hours in evening.

Ars.

Eye problems, with a cold or flu

General relief

Dulc.

Much pain, heat, inflammation, burning tears, light sensitivity.

Bell. If no results then Merc and then try Hepar.

Dimness, sparks before eyes, or affected after every cold.

Dulc. Afterwards give Sulph. Or if no results Calc.

Ear problems, with a cold or flu

Constant buzzing and difficult hearing.

Dulc. If symptoms return then Sulph.

Tearing pain externally, shooting pain internally, dry ear. Peevish mood.

Cham.

Tearing, shooting, aching pain.

Nux-v.

Tearing twitching pain sometimes also in face, and hot and red. Or moist or running ears. Tends to cry easily.

Puls.

Tearing, shooting pain with much buzzing. Burning discharge but ear not hot and red. Or blood from ear, glands around ear swollen, or throat swollen.

Merc.

Shooting pain when blowing nose or buzzing and throbbing. Heat, redness, and itching remain.

Hepar-s

For children’s earache in general. Puls. If no results, then Dulc or Rhus-t.

Discharge with buzzing and burning after other remedies.

Sulph.

Teeth problems, with a cold or flu

Toothache in general.

Cham, Rhus-t, or Nux-m.

Toothache every time you get a cold.

China or Merc. Follow with Sulph.

Throat, sore, with a cold or flu

Sore throat in general.

Bell, Dulc, Merc, or Sulph.

Caused by drinking very cold water.

Bell

Normal cold.

Dulc

Throat dry and hot, tries to swallow often, much saliva or tonsils swollen, shooting pain from swallowing or speaking, hawks often, difficult to swallow, fears suffocation, throat seems too narrow, drinking sometimes comes back through nose, hasty mood.

Bell. If no results, then Sulph.

Pain less violent, tongue seems paralyzed, perspires much with no relief and could be offensive, quarrelsome mood.

Dulc. If no results, then Merc.

Nausea or vomiting, with a cold or flu

Especially after a rash has been suppressed.

Ip.

Vomiting is sour or bitter with dry heaves.

Bell.

Vomiting tough phlegm.

Dulc.

Worse after exercise, eating, speaking, when riding, or after sleep.

Cocc.

From every movement but can’t sit still, very weak, thirsty, but worse from drinking. Ars.

Nausea with spasms.

Cup.

After ice cold water or cold fruit.

Carb-v.

Extremities, pain, with a cold or flu

Uneasy and moves often, everything feels hard, limbs numb or strained, worse on jarring or stepping even when other people walk across room, has a loud voice, approaches them, or moves hand.

Arn.

Pain with fever.

Acon until fever leaves, then Arn.

Pain worse with rest and at night with lameness or cold limbs, with pale swelling or burning of feet, or with redness and swelling of big toe, with a stiff neck, very dry skin, or offensive perspiration without relief.

Dulc or Merc.

Same symptoms after every cold with uneasiness when people are approaching or when trying to swallow, worse at rest, better in motion, swelling, burning and throbbing pains in big toe.

Phos-ac

Swollen knees, lumps on joints of hands and fingers.

Sulph and then Calc.

Fever, with a cold or flu

Troubled or other emotions, or upset stomach after new diet, or chilly at first, or alternating chills and heat, esp. in evening. Or much heat of head, face, or all over.

Nux-v

Restless or children in general.

Acon.

Very cross and irritable.
