Croup - noisy breathing and loud cough

For the child usually under three years, the first thing you can do is provide lots of humidity for the child while you hold them in a steam filled room such as a bathroom where the shower is running very hot.

Epiglottis, beginning with a severe sore throat, marked fever and sense of constriction of the throat where the child might lean forward with their mouth open to breath and drool noticeably, is a medical emergency since the child make choke.

Repeating a selected remedy once every half hour for two or three doses has produced some relief usually. Follow the symptoms of the remedy to make sure it still is the appropriate one.

Aconite is used at the onset where the cough is loud, dry and barking and wakes early in the night. Typical mental symptoms are restlessness and anxiety.

Hepar sulph. is when coughing continues and breathing is still not smooth and easy. The cough is deeper and more rattling than the Aconite cough. Mentals and generals are irritability and sensitive to touch and cold.

Spongia is for loud, dry coughs with hoarse rasping like sawing a log. Generals include worse from talking, lying down excitement, or ice-cold drinks.
